North Carolina congresswoman gives 10yo a political lecture after his school assignment lands on her desk

She reprimanded the 4th grader for writing her a letter.

North Carolina congresswoman Virginia Foxx is facing heavy criticism online after she sent a strongly worded political letter to a 10-year-old boy. The child, Christian Mango, a fourth grader from Greensboro, had written to Foxx as part of a school assignment in which students sent persuasive essays to their representatives.

According to The Nerd Stash, his mother, Emily Mango, confirmed that Christian chose the topic entirely on his own, advocating for a $5,000 federal tax rebate on new electric vehicle purchases.

The letter Christian sent was mailed in an envelope that clearly said “4th Grade” in the return address. Despite this, Foxx did not send a simple or age-appropriate reply. Instead, she wrote back with a detailed lecture about federal spending, the national debt, and the limits of government.

Foxx’s letter crossed a line by attacking a child’s school and calling his assignment propaganda

In her letter, Foxx wrote, “What many folks do not realize is that the money that ‘comes from’ the federal government actually comes from ordinary citizens who pay taxes to support that government.”

She went on to say, “Therefore, your request that ‘the federal government should give a $5,000 tax rebate for all new electric car purchases’ means that the federal government must take that money out of the pockets of hardworking people who may not have the means to buy an electric vehicle in the first place.”

The part of her letter that drew the most anger was a direct attack on Christian’s education. Foxx wrote, “Please ask your teacher to explain propaganda to you,” and added, “My guess is that your teachers will not give you a good educational experience and help you learn to think as they are too interested in indoctrinating you.” This comment has been widely condemned as inappropriate and aggressive toward a young child.

Screenshots of the letter spread quickly on platforms like Reddit, where users reacted with strong criticism. One commenter wrote, “Virginia Foxx‘s brain is about as gerrymandered as her district.” Many people felt it was wrong to use a fourth grader as a target for such heavy political language.

North Carolina has seen no shortage of stories where everyday situations spiral into unexpected public controversies, much like this case of a woman who brought her mom to back her up at a butcher shop – only to be surprised by the outcome.

Christian told Fox 8 that he did not fully understand the letter at first. After his mother explained it to him, he said, “I think that was wrong,” and noted that “the school didn’t do anything.” His mother, Emily Mango, was more direct in her response.

She called the letter “horrific” and “reprehensible” in a social media post addressed to Foxx, and questioned whether the congresswoman was fit to serve on a Committee for Education given that she had attacked both a child and the teaching profession.

Some Reddit users also pointed to what they saw as a double standard in Foxx’s concern about government spending. One commenter wrote, “Please respond and ask her where in the constitution it says we should support foreign countries with the hardworking American tax dollars?”

The state has also been at the center of far more serious controversies, including a North Carolina murder case with troubling questions about the real victim that captured national attention.

Not everyone was critical of Foxx. Some supporters argued that she was simply being open about her political views and that she did not talk down to the student. They believe children should be exposed to different political perspectives, including ones that are unpopular in certain circles.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about how elected officials should communicate with young constituents. Many people feel that when a child reaches out to a representative, the response should be kind and respectful, regardless of any policy disagreement.

The reaction to this exchange shows that a large number of people found Foxx’s approach to be deeply inappropriate, and the story has grown far beyond a local school project into a national debate about political conduct and respect for children.
