Passenger says American Airlines deplaned a full flight at midnight over the pilot reportedly being too tired to fly

FAA rules say tired pilots cannot legally keep flying.

A TikTok video showing an American Airlines flight being deplaned late at night has gone viral after a passenger claimed the airline removed everyone from the aircraft because the pilot was reportedly too sleepy to fly. The clip, posted by user @ihurrrrr on TikTok, had gathered more than 216,400 views.

In the video, @ihurrrrr wrote, “POV: American Airlines boards the whole [plane] decides at midnight to offload you because the pilot was sleepy.” The passenger did not share specific details about the flight, such as the route or departure airport.

In the caption, @ihurrrrr questioned how the situation unfolded, writing, “Is there not a copilot / did the pilot not realize he was sleepy before……… wtF.” The creator later added more context in the comments, saying the pilot had landed the day before and that another pilot was reportedly upset with him, suggesting there may have been more to the situation than fatigue alone.

FAA rules allow pilots to pull themselves from flights if they feel too tired to fly safely

In a follow-up comment, @ihurrrrr clarified their frustration was less about the fatigue itself and more about the timing. “He landed a day before and the other pilot was very upset at him (so something else could have happened) Totally get it a pilot is sleepy!!!! It was just odd we all boarded and it was decided an hour after being on the plane when the pilot was aware of the flight!!!!!!” she wrote.

Superior Flight School points out that Federal Aviation Administration rules strictly limit how long pilots can work and how much rest they must get between shifts. Those limits may vary based on factors including when a pilot’s workday begins and how many flights they are scheduled to operate.

Current FAA rules, as stated by Cornell Law School, require pilots to receive at least 10 consecutive hours of rest before their next assignment, with the opportunity for at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. If unexpected delays push a crew member past their maximum allowed duty time, the airline must find a replacement before the flight can legally depart. This is not the first time an unexpected incident before takeoff has left passengers unsettled on a flight.

The FAA also holds pilots responsible for determining whether they are fit to fly. FAA says that if a pilot believes fatigue could affect their ability to operate an aircraft safely, that must be addressed before the flight proceeds. American Airlines has been at the center of other passenger-related controversies as well, including a case where a woman was placed on the airline’s no-fly list over an alleged incident she denied.

Many viewers who commented on the video appeared to side with the pilot’s reported decision. “Plans changing can suck but the pilot is making a decision that could’ve saved hundreds of lives,” one person wrote. Another added, “If that’s really the reason I wouldn’t want to fly with a sleepy pilot I respect his acknowledgement that he’s too tired to fly.”

One commenter praised the pilot directly, writing, “What a great pilot to admit that and keep yall safe in the ground.” However, not all viewers were fully satisfied with the explanation. “Ok I get the safety concerns in the comments…but why did they land people mid flight? They could’ve had another pilot fly the plane, or even canceled. Landing in the middle of a flight is unusual,” another person wrote.
