Reddit has a unique place in the tapestry of social media. While other platforms have evolved into mediums of the personal — whether it be careers, personal lives, or even political opinions — Reddit has remained a place where people can maintain anonymity while discussing their most intimate concerns. Recently, an anonymous user went viral on the platform after asking whether it was worth risking a falling out with her in-laws to report their neighbors for allegedly violating zoning laws.
According to the post, she has an 18-month-old toddler and another child on the way. Occasionally, she wrote, her toddler visits her in-laws. The only issue she has with this arrangement is that her in-laws have neighbors with a swimming pool, and the property is not fenced off from the in-laws’ yard. The poster says this is against the law where she lives, and that the only reason it has never been enforced is because only her in-laws have visibility of — and therefore access to — the pool.
Worried about the possibility of her children accessing the pool without the skills to survive in the water, she has been considering reporting the neighbors. However, her husband insisted that she should “stay out of their business.” She did not want to accept that response as the end of the matter. She remained adamant that the law exists for a reason. Furthermore, she argued that it only takes a moment for something she described as “devastating” to happen.
Insurance tends to force a pool to need a fence
One person in the comments asked, “How do they even have homeowners insurance with a pool that’s not fenced?!?” Another user suggested that reporting them might ultimately prove ineffective, writing, “Chances are they built it unpermitted after they already secured their policy, or they just straight up lied to their agent. Either way, the irony is that if an accident actually happens, the insurance company will investigate, see the lack of a fence, and deny the claim in a heartbeat.”
In the post, the picture showing access to the pool makes it fairly clear that a toddler who does not know any better could simply wander toward the water and, if nobody is around, potentially drown. So it is easy to understand her concerns.
She later added an update to the post that read, “My husband and I will talk with his parents, then we will talk to the neighbors either with or without them. If it doesn’t solve the issue, we will be reporting them. Thank you to everyone helping us both see how truly serious this is, it’s not just my pregnancy emotions.”
Across the country, authorities continue to warn parents to exercise caution as the warmer months arrive. It is not just swimming-related incidents either. Vulnerable members of society such as toddlers, older adults, and, in some cases, even pets require additional care as temperatures continue to rise. That means keeping tabs on access to bodies of water, checking the condition of life jackets, and not leaving vulnerable people unattended in vehicles under the scorching midday sun.
Hopefully, this latest pool dispute will be resolved without much conflict.
