A flight attendant’s announcement about passengers standing up too early after landing has gone viral on TikTok. The video posted by user MJ (@the_mannii), which has been viewed more than 4.5 million times, shows passengers getting up from their seats even as the flight attendant jokingly tells them not to.
In the video, the flight attendant can be heard saying over the intercom, “All right, hurry up, jump up, grab everything, and go nowhere.” The remark drew laughter from the group. A 2024 YouGov poll found that about half of respondents considered it “unacceptable” to stand up immediately after a plane lands.
Separately, a 2023 poll from travel website KAYAK found that 67% of travelers said standing up right after the seatbelt sign turns off serves no real purpose. Despite these findings, many people appear to continue to stand up shortly after landing.
Flight attendant’s joke draws attention to a common landing habit
According to a Reddit thread, one of the most commonly cited reasons is a desire to stretch one’s legs after sitting for an extended period. Other users in the same thread said they associate standing with making progress toward leaving the plane, while some claimed that standing early helps the overall deplaning process move more efficiently, though this view was not verified independently.
Other viral clips have similarly shown how a single flight attendant’s request can shape a flight’s mood, including one case where a crew member’s announcement about staying seated during turbulence led to tension with a passenger.
People also noted that some passengers stand up early because they have tight connecting flights and want to exit as quickly as possible once allowed. Some airlines and governments have taken steps to discourage passengers from standing before they are permitted to do so. Turkey’s civil aviation authority announced in 2025 that passengers arriving in the country could be fined if they stood up before the “fasten seatbelt” sign was turned off.
Reactions in the comments section of the TikTok video were mixed. One person wrote. “Am I the only one who just keeps sitting till EVERYONE is out?😂” Another person implied that some people are in a hurry to get off the plane because they have connecting flights. “Sorry for having connecting flight 🙃”, they wrote. “Nah I want to stretch. I have a back injury 😂,” another said.
Passenger behavior toward flight crews isn’t always a source of friction. In another case, a couple said a husband’s small in-flight repair appeared to earn the family dozens of snacks from a grateful attendant.
