‘Somebody should’ve warned me’: Texas woman takes her dad to Toca Madera for Father’s Day. She gets hit with a bill she never saw coming

It “screams exclusivity.”

A Texas woman’s Father’s Day dinner apparently came with an unexpectedly large bill after she took her dad to Toca Madera, an upscale Mexican-influenced steakhouse. Content creator @foodieluv.travel documented the moment in a TikTok video that has drawn more than 122,000 views.

The video shows her sitting with a card already in hand, looking at the bill with what appeared to be a forced smile. A text overlay on the video reads, “Took him to Toca Madera for Father’s Day. Nobody warned me the bill was a mortgage payment.” In the caption, she added, “Toca Madera was good but somebody should’ve warned me about the bill. Happy Father’s Day.”

Toca Madera appears to be an upscale, Mexican-influenced steakhouse chain known for combining dining with spectacle. The restaurant’s digital menu does not list prices, and reviews of the restaurant fill in the gaps instead.

Menu prices at the restaurant run into hundreds of dollars per dish

According to a review from The Infatuation, the Houston location “screams exclusivity,” with a members-only dining menu, a speakeasy with an annual membership fee of $1,500, and flaming tomahawk steaks served tableside by staff in bespoke suits. The same review called the food “just OK” relative to its price, and stated that the restaurant’s main appeal is its atmosphere, which includes fire dancers, a DJ booth, and live music.

PaperCity Magazine listed specific menu prices that may help explain the size of the bill. According to that outlet, the 40-ounce flaming tomahawk steak is priced at $325, and the seafood tower starts at $195 and goes up to $325 for a larger size.

A crispy wonton taco appetizer made with A5 Wagyu beef reportedly costs $34 for two pieces, and premium American Wagyu is priced at $52 per ounce. Sides also seem expensive, with truffle fries listed at $29 and mac and cheese at $18. Other diners have faced similarly steep surprise charges, including a Georgia woman’s disputed taco restaurant bill

High prices at fine dining restaurants are common across the industry and are not unique to Toca Madera. According to MOCA Dining, a fine dining restaurant based in Hanoi, several factors typically drive up costs at high-end restaurants. These may include the cost of sourcing rare ingredients such as Wagyu beef, truffles, or caviar, the skill required for complex cooking techniques, and the cost of elaborate plating and presentation.

MOCA Dining’s cost comparison places fast food at $5 to $15 per person, fast casual dining at $10 to $20 per person, and casual dining at $15 to $50 per person. Fine dining, according to the same comparison, can range from $50 to several hundred dollars per person, with some ultra-luxury dining experiences exceeding $1,000 per person. Steep individual menu items have drawn similar reactions elsewhere, including a $24 cake slice at a Chicago steakhouse.

The video drew a number of comments from viewers who said they had similar experiences at Toca Madera. One commenter wrote, “I don’t mind paying if it’s really good. If the food sucks I’ll be pissed off!” Another commenter compared the Houston location to one elsewhere, writing, “The food and the environment isn’t even all the great if you’ve gone to the one in Vegas. And even Vegas wasn’t as expensive.” A separate comment read, “Food is so mid there it’s just aesthetics.”

One commenter described a similarly high bill, writing, “Me and my besties spent almost $500 on just us two 😳.” Another commenter pointed to a nearby alternative, writing, “Food across the street at Flora is a lot better, the vibes and atmosphere as well.”
