A Massachusetts family set off on what they described as “the trip of a lifetime”—a three-month vacation to Fiji. But the dream getaway to the South Pacific quickly turned into a medical emergency after the family’s father was bitten by what they believe was an insect native to the area. Now, his loved ones say he urgently needs a medical evacuation back to the United States, a flight that could cost as much as $250,000.
According to People, Holbrook resident Scott Winslow first noticed the bite while he was out on a boat with his family. From that point on, his condition deteriorated rapidly. By the time the boat reached shore, Winslow was reportedly unable to walk.
He’s currently in the intensive care unit
His family still does not know exactly what caused the illness, but his condition worsened so quickly that he was admitted to the intensive care unit. His daughter, Lisa Babbin, told the outlet, “By the time they got to a doctor, he was so sick.” Since being hospitalized, Winslow has been placed on a ventilator and is now battling septic shock.
According to his family, the infection has continued to spread and has led to multiple organ complications. They launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking $40,000 to help cover the immediate costs associated with arranging a medical transfer back to the U.S.
In one update on the fundraiser, the family wrote: “He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Hospital in Fiji, battling septic shock. His kidneys are functioning at only a fraction of their normal capacity, and the infection has spread to his gallbladder and lungs. After being transferred from a private hospital, Claire was faced with every spouse’s worst nightmare and was told to prepare for the worst.”
The family has since raised more than $31,000, but says time is running short. They have also applied for an emergency U.S. government loan to help finance the costly medical evacuation and are awaiting a decision.
The fundraiser also reflects on why the trip meant so much to the couple, writing: “If you know Claire and Scott, you know their love for the ocean.” It continued, “Some of their happiest memories have been made on the water with friends and family through Wessagusset Yacht Club. This trip was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream — one they earned through years of dedication, hard work, and selflessness.”
The family is in contact with a US Representative
Representative Stephen Lynch’s office has reportedly contacted the family to explore ways of helping facilitate Scott’s return to the United States. While no solution has yet been finalized, the congressman’s office is said to be working with the family as they navigate the emergency.
According to the family, the medical care available in Fiji has stabilized Scott but is limited in its ability to provide the specialized treatment he now requires. Their hope is to raise enough support — and secure the necessary approvals — to get him back to the United States before his condition worsens further.
