Washington Man drops something in his hotel room. When he bends to get it, a hand reaches out from under the bed

You’ve probably had a few travel mishaps in your time, but I’m willing to bet you haven’t had an experience quite like the one Tyler Mecher recently shared on TikTok. Tyler is a California native who recently moved to Washington and spends his time documenting his trips around the world. His latest video is making waves online, racking up over 563K views, and once you give it a watch, you will know why. 

The video starts with Tyler filming himself in the mirror, asking his followers, “You almost ever sh-t yourself in a hotel bedroom?” After that bold opening, he pans the camera toward the bed, noting, “Well, come with me and see why that almost happened to me.” As he walks toward what he describes as a “Nice little bed,” he begins to lower himself down. That’s when the situation turns from a standard hotel tour into something straight out of a horror movie.

As he bends down, he describes his disconcerting discovery. “You ever drop something, and you reach down, and then there’s a mirror down here. And first off, you see a hand that’s reaching under the bed. And then you are confused. So you put your head down, and you see a face?” As he lies on the ground, his camera captures that the base of the bed is a mirror. He ends the clip by remarking, “I don’t know who designed this.”

Even with his warning, the community was startled

TikTok was equal parts entertained and confused. One TikToker commented, “I would have started ugly crying I’m afraid,” while another added, “I would have screamed, like really loudly. I have such an awful startle reflex.” Many others felt the same way, with one person writing, “I flinched just watching the video,” and another admitting, “You warned us and I still got jump scared.” 

Some viewers were clearly rattled by the sheer surprise of the moment, with one user noting, “At no point did I know where this was going,” and another stating, “My soul would have departed.” One commenter even shared a similar experience, saying, “Reminds me of the hotel room where the ENTIRE WALL was a mirror at the head of the bed. No headboard. I woke up and saw myself and screamed.” 

Interestingly, one person offered a practical perspective on the mirror’s presence: “the mirrors are helpful for housekeeping! I found too many uncapped needles when I was a housekeeper. one swipe of your foot & you get stuck with one, some (not all) hotels have little mirrors on a stick to look under the beds & this would make that much easier.”

In Tyler’s case, the design choice, whether intended for housekeeping safety or aesthetic, ended up creating a massive jump scare instead. It’s a perfect example of how even the most well-intentioned interior design can feel totally off-putting when it isn’t properly considered from the guest’s perspective.
