Older woman won’t stop trying to get a man’s attention at Aldi. When he finally turns around she says something about his hair he can’t unhear

A man says an older woman kept calling out to him while he was shopping at Aldi, and once he finally turned around, their conversation took an unexpected turn. He shared the story in a video on TikTok.

The man, who posts under the username calabrese1976, said he was focused on his grocery list and did not realize someone was speaking to him at first. He said a woman’s voice called out from behind him more than once before he responded.

The video was posted with the caption “#saltandpepper #youngman #humans #aldi #wisconsin,” suggesting the encounter took place at an Aldi store in Wisconsin.

Man says he ignored the greeting at first, thinking it was not meant for him

In the video, the man said he was leaning on his cart trying to plan out his shopping for the week when he heard someone say, “Excuse me, young man.” He said he did not react because he assumed the comment was not directed at him.

He said the voice called out the same phrase a second time, so he turned to look. He described seeing an older woman wearing a summer dress, with a cane hanging from the handle of her shopping cart.

He said he asked her, “Are you talking to me?” and she replied, “Well, yeah.” He told her he did not think she was speaking to him, adding, “I’m gonna be 50 in a couple months, so I didn’t think you were talking to me.” He said she responded, “Well, I was right. That is young.”

He said the woman then asked him for help reaching an item on a high shelf. According to the video, she asked him to grab a container of breadcrumbs, and he confirmed with her before doing so, asking, “Just one?” He said she told him yes, just one, and he placed it in her cart.

After he helped her, he said the woman told him she liked his hair. He said he responded by saying it looked “kind of crazy today.” According to the video, she replied, “No, the color of it is great. The salt and pepper. I was always a big fan of the salt and pepper.” These everyday encounters can range from comments on appearance to unsettling moments at checkout, such as when a Charlotte woman’s encounter at the Aldi belt made her skin crawl. 

He said he thanked her and joked that his hair would soon be “all salt.” He said she responded, “Well, enjoy it while you can,” before shaking her head and saying, “If I was 20 years younger.”

He said he asked her to clarify what she meant, and she replied, “Well, let’s just say I’d be having salt and pepper on my meals this weekend.”

The video ends with that exchange. The creator did not say whether the two spoke further or if he learned the woman’s name. The video drew more than 1,650 comments. One commenter wrote, “Granny was having flashbacks.” Another wrote, “Granny didn’t need any breadcrumbs,” to which a third commenter replied, “nope shedid not. she wanted the whole loaf.”

Other commenters responded to the woman’s line about “salt and pepper” on her meals. One wrote, “71 yo here. She knows good seasoning.” Another commented, “Salt and pepper on my meals this weekend!! Incredible,” and a reply to that comment called it an “Epic response.”
