A New York City man identified as Austin, who posts under the handle @liftwithaustn, shared a video of himself eating a 40-ounce steak at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant. The video shows him seated at a table with the massive cut of meat placed on a white plate, sitting in a pool of brown sauce.
On-screen text in the TikTok video reads, “ordering a 40oz steak from texas roadhouse.” Austin is seen wearing a white t-shirt and a black New York Yankees cap. A fork rests on the plate next to the steak, and a menu advertising “New Daily” drinks is visible in the background.
Instead of using the fork, Austin picks up the steak with both hands and takes a large bite directly from it. He continues holding the steak with his hands as the camera stays focused on him. Partway through the video, an off-screen voice, who appears to be a Texas Roadhouse staff member, begins speaking loudly and with enthusiasm while Austin keeps eating.
Video draws millions of views and thousands of comments
The video has been viewed more than 2 million times and has received over 95,000 likes and more than 5,000 comments. Many viewers questioned whether the steak was real. One commenter wrote, “that steak looks like it came from a science lab.” Another wrote, “Def 3D printed,” while a third commenter said, “Looks like a movie prop.”
Other viewers focused on the way Austin ate the steak, pointing out that a fork was available on the plate but not used. One person wrote, “Umm knife and fork is on table ?” Several commenters criticized Austin’s table manners.
Another wrote, “Yeah, that’s not really acceptable behavior at a restaurant. Manners do matter.” Another commenter said, “Parents had a teaching opportunity and failed.” One unimpressed viewer wrote, “Am I the only one that thinks these steaks are overrated? lol”
Not everyone agreed with the criticism. One commenter defended the eating style by pointing to how the steak looked, writing, “everyone’s criticizing your eating method but when a steak looks this cartoony i think this is the only way!!!!” The debate over steak etiquette continues, as seen when a woman orders a 54-family steak meal from Texas Roadhouse and opens the box.
Another commenter reacted to the wave of negative feedback with humor, writing, “I think I’m gonna have to start eating steak with my hands. According to these comments, it’ll p**s off more than half of the restaurant customers, and that’s absolutely hilarious.”
Texas Roadhouse has not issued a public statement regarding the video as of this report. Texas Roadhouse has faced customer scrutiny on other matters too, such as when a Boston woman ordered a 20-ounce ribeye blue rare.
