Rhode Island bride reaches for what she thinks is a tissue. She realizes the awkward mistake she just made: ‘father was too stunned to speak’

A bride’s mix-up during her wedding ceremony has drawn millions of views online after she mistook a priest’s vestment for a tissue. Lauren Bruce shared the moment in a TikTok video that has since gained 17.9 million views and more than 1.5 million likes.

The video shows Bruce standing with her husband as a priest, dressed in white vestments with gold embroidery, holds a white cloth over their joined hands to bless them. Bruce, thinking the cloth was a tissue offered to her, brought it to her face instead.

The clip captures the entire moment, along with on-screen captions explaining what Bruce was thinking as it happened.

Bride mistook a blessing cloth for a tissue during the ceremony

According to the on-screen caption in the video, Bruce wrote that she is sharing the clip of “me thinking our priest was handing his a tissue but in fact putting his Holy cloth on our hands to bless us.” Weddings can certainly bring unexpected drama, as when a bride uninvites her sister-in-law from the wedding but she shows up to the rehearsal anyway. 

In the video, Bruce and her husband stand facing the priest, who extends a white cloth over their joined hands. Appearing emotional, Bruce leans forward and brings the cloth to her face, seemingly to wipe her nose or eyes. On-screen text at this point reads, “Thank you Father.”

As Bruce continues to wipe her face, the caption changes to “my husbands face in this moment,” while her husband looks at her with a slight smile. Bruce then looks up, her expression shifting from emotional to surprised, as she realizes the cloth is attached to the priest’s vestments. The caption reads, “Me realizing the “tissue” was actually attached to him… his Holy cloth.”

Bruce pulls the cloth away from her face and breaks into laughter, looking at her husband, who smiles and laughs with her. The priest, still holding the cloth over their hands, pauses briefly before saying, “May the Lord be with you, my friends.” The on-screen text adds, “Father was too stunned to speak.”

Bruce responded to a comment on the video explaining what happened during the ceremony. “Thank you!!! He was putting it over our hands to bless us and I didn’t know that was what he was doing and I started laughing out of fear and nervousness. He was laughing too all was good!” she wrote.

The video drew a range of reactions from viewers in the comments section. One commenter wrote, “I love the way your husband kissed your head instead of being upset about it.” Another said, “GIRL you’re SO lucky you have a silent laugh! because I’d have snorted the church roofs down!”

A third commenter wrote, “The fact that you realized makes it 10x better.
