LA woman’s $11.99 sub sandwich comes with one unexpected surprise. Then she hears the explanation: ‘Am I trippin or are they?’

Her sandwich came toasted, and so did the bill.

A Los Angeles woman said in a TikTok video that a trip to a sandwich shop left her questioning the final price on her order. Shybabyyy, who posts as @shyrayel_, described sitting in her car afterward and walking through what she said happened at the shop.

In the video, she stated that the menu listed a large sandwich at $11.99. She said she understood that tax would be added, but the total came to $14.82, which she described as sounding a little high.

She said she asked about the difference. She recounted that the employee told her the extra cost was because she had the sandwich toasted, which cost $1.50. On-screen text in the video reads, “This economy is WICKED.” In the caption, she wrote, “Am I trippin or are they????”

In the video, Shybabyyy repeated the amount and expressed surprise. She said, “$1.50. $1.50 to get something toasted?” She added, “You’re gonna charge $1.50 just to get something toasted?” She stated she could have toasted the sandwich at home. “I could have did that s–t at home. If I would have known that, I would have did that s–t at home,” she said.

Shybabyyy said $1.50 to toast something was crazy to her. She added that 50 cents would have been fine, but $1.50 was not. “$1.50 to get something toasted is crazy to me. That is crazy to me. 50 cents, okay, cool. $1.50? Y’all got me f–ked up,” she said. Such customer complaints about fast food value are not new, as one woman’s Jimmy Johns sandwich bread made a knocking sound after she cashed in rewards points.

She opened the video by saying she did not know if the prices were just an LA thing or if the economy was beyond f–ked up right now. The video has gained 129,300 views, 19,000 likes, and around 950 comments.

Sandwich customers elsewhere have also reported being charged extra to have their bread toasted. In the r/subway subreddit, several customers shared experiences of being charged for the service. However, the posts suggest that the practice may vary by location, with some stores charging extra while others do not.

Viewers left a range of reactions in the comments. One person suggested they would have asked the shop to untoast the sandwich, writing, “I would’ve told them to untoast it now we both look crazy.” One customer’s shock over a sandwich surprise mirrors a Dallas woman’s discovery of an inedible element in her expensive Dave’s Killer Bread.

Another commenter pointed to rising costs in general, stating, “We’re literally living in hell. Just imagine in 5 years…” A third joked about extra fees, writing, “$0.03 for the little welcome chime that went off when you opened the door.”

Some focused on the toasting charge itself. One wrote, “$1.50 for some heat?!” Another described a similar experience with an add-on fee, saying, “I had the same reaction when they said it was $1.20 to add cheese to my whopper jr. I could see 50¢ but $1.20!?!”

Other comments called the practice out of control. One said, “The gouging is out of control.” Another wrote, “Sounds like they’re toasted.” A further commenter advised against supporting the shops, stating, “wow stop patronizing these fast food places. they are robbing people.”
