If you are planning on taking a cruise, one TikToker, Kass (Kassandjames), has a warning for you. In fact, she recently went incredibly viral on TikTok for her blunt reality check for fellow travelers, gaining over 10.7 million views for her post. It also went on to trigger a massive debate about personal choices and ship etiquette. While striding onto her balcony on a Royal Caribbean cruise, the Spirit-class passenger wryly warned that their balconies weren’t as private as they’d assume.
In the video, Kass cautioned, “Your cruise balcony is not as private as you think it is. And I need you to understand that before you do something you regret.” She warned, “Cruise ships are stacked like apartment buildings, and the people above you can see down. I literally just saw my neighbors looking down at me. The people next to you can hear you. And yes, there are for sure cameras that can see onto your balcony. Sound travels like crazy out here.”
She offered simple guidance for thrill-seekers to follow: “If you wouldn’t do it on a hotel balcony with 4,000 strangers and kids stacked around you, don’t do it here.” This video was a direct result of another viral video she had uploaded the previous day. In that clip, Kass was enjoying a snack on her balcony when a couple began having sex on the balcony directly above. As she noted in the on-screen text, “Having a sail away party of their own upstairs.”
Privacy vs exhibitionism vs eitiquette
In the initial video, many in her audience argued that vacations were for daring things like this. One user wrote, “Good for them. That’s half the reason to get the balcony.” So, Kass reminded them, “I hate to tell you that you can get kicked off the ship for doing this.” She also told others who were supportive of the situation, “I hear you for sure – just know that your neighbors are listening and the bridge team is watching.”
At one point, one TikToker criticized Kass, asking, “so you listen and record?” Kass had a simple, pointed reply: “I was already filming. and I want to enjoy my balcony too!”
The debate continued into her follow-up video. One user told those who were supportive of fun in the balcony, “For all the IDC people- getting caught will put you on a permanent list.” Another warned, “Not to mention that some cruise lines will kick you off the ship, even during adult only cruises, if you’re caught getting spicy on your balcony.”
Someone else offered technical insight to support what Cass had warned of, noting, “Fun fact: of the few cameras constantly playing live in the bridge and security office, it’s the side of ship angles that shows the balconies.”
According to a guide by Cruise Critic, the lack of privacy on a cruise balcony can get you penalized for a lot of behaviors. Amongst the list of things to avoid were: Smoking because of the fire hazard, nude sunbathing because of public indecency considerations, playing loud music because it’s disruptive, and throwing anything overboard. In fact, even off a ship, singing and being disruptive on a balcony can be very annoying and trigger neighbourly revenge.
Of course, one of the main things Cruise Critic mentioned was sex and other intimate activities. Not just because of witnesses and cameras. They also noted the danger involved, pointing to past incidents where passengers have fallen overboard.
Listy Travels provided more detail about potential consequences. They noted that being caught engaging in sexual activity on a balcony can leave you confined to your cabin. In more severe cases, you can potentially be disembarked at the next port of call.
They also noted that if a ship is in territorial waters, local laws regarding public indecency may apply, potentially leading to fines or even arrest. A criminal record for public indecency can then have long-lasting effects on your employment and reputation.
Kass’s message remains consistent: stay respectful of those around you. As she told her viewers in the on-screen text of her post, “Go on an adults only cruise if you want to have adult fun.”
