Arizona server took a nap before her shift, only to wake up 14 hours later. But it’s her manager who is winning the internet

A masterclass in empathy.

We have all been there, where a quick snooze before work turns into a total disaster. A TikTok video from @kellybrooke.m recently highlighted this exact nightmare after she managed to sleep right through her entire 3 PM shift, the Daily Dot reported. The video has already pulled in more than 890,000 views and over 4,700 comments, proving that plenty of people have experienced the perils of the pre-shift nap.

Kelly had recently returned from traveling through Georgia and Texas, so she blamed the time zone changes for her exhaustion. About an hour before her shift was set to start, she decided to crash on her couch while still dressed in her work clothes. She even set multiple alarms to ensure she would wake up in time, but it clearly didn’t work out that way. She ended up sleeping for 14 hours straight, waking up at 4 AM the next morning in the exact same position she started in.

Waking up to find a mountain of missed calls and texts from her restaurant was a major wake-up call. Her coworkers were genuinely worried because they knew she had a history of health issues, including a previous medical episode that saw her taken from her apartment by ambulance. She mentioned that she had never slept that deeply in her life, noting, “I never sleep that long or that hard. I will be waking up at any slight sound.”

Facing the music, she had to prepare herself to explain the situation

“Now I have to say it out loud. I have to call the restaurant and say hey guys, yes, I, a 27-year-old woman, did sleep through my entire shift,” she said. She waited until a reasonable hour to reach out to her coworker and eventually called her manager to apologize, even offering to take a written warning for the mishap.

The response she got from her manager is honestly why this story is blowing up online. Instead of firing her or getting angry, her manager was incredibly understanding. “She said girl, we’re good,” Kelly shared. Her manager pointed out that she had been consistent with that level of empathy during other tough moments over the last month and a half, including a time when Kelly had to call in while crying from a hospital.

Working in Arizona, where jobs are typically at-will, Kelly knows that most restaurants aren’t exactly known for being lenient about missed shifts. She admitted that her manager’s grace is a huge reason why she has stayed in the role despite the health struggles she has been navigating lately.

The comment section on TikTok has been flooded with people sharing their own stories and applauding the manager. One person wrote, “What restaurant?? I’d love to support one that actually treats their employees like human beings that’s so hard to find here.” Another user shared, “love a good manager, i once called mine crying in the urgent care cause i got the flu right before a big weekend where we were already short staffed due to teenagers requesting off.”

Of course, there was also plenty of advice from people who have learned the hard way. One commenter warned, “NEVER EVER TAKE THE PRE SHIFT NAP. I learned the hard way after I slept for SIXTEEN HOURS STRAIGHT and missed a Saturday night… double.”
