A Massachusetts driver’s reaction to her car’s empty tank has just gone viral on Instagram and TikTok, netting over 1.8 million views in less than a week. Felicia Barr (mrsbossbarr) is part of the leadership at the service center of a Make it METRO dealership. She also runs social media accounts where she shares customer conversations and other incidents with her team. Then came this customer who brought her car in when it stalled and refused to believe the diagnosis.
Felicia captioned the post, “When the attitude is full, but the tank is empty…” In the video, Felicia is in a follow-up call with the customer. Felicia starts by confirming the complaint, saying, “Your complaint in your drop-off envelope was that when you were driving, that it just shut off? Correct? And you lost power, but you still had the lights on and the radio was on. Everything else was good, right?”
We hear the customer respond, saying, “Yeah, everything else was good, but the car stopped moving.” That is when Felicia delivers the team’s diagnosis. “Okay, so we went out to the vehicle, and the battery is fully charged. All the lights are working. And what we did notice is that you have no gas in the vehicle,” Felicia explains. The customer is immediately defensive, insisting, “That’s impossible. My husband puts gas in it every morning.”
Sticking to her guns
The exchange quickly escalates as the customer refuses to accept what she was being told. Felicia tries to be diplomatic, suggesting that maybe the husband forgot or it has been a few days. She then explains that the reason for the follow-up call was to get authorization to fill up the tank, so that the team could test it further.
The customer, however, snaps back, “Absolutely not. I am not authorizing you to fill my tank with gas that you’re going to get. It’s probably gonna be some car rental price. I am not authorizing that. I need you to figure out why my car shut off. The whole point is, my car is not running.”
Felicia tries to remain calm and tells the customer, “Okay, it’s. It’s not running cause there is no fuel in the car, so there is no gas. So we used our gas tank here and we got it started and it is running right now. But it’s not gonna run for a very long time because you do need gas.” In a different case, a couple’s car stalled in Costco because it was tampered with.
The customer then asks, “So what’s your magical gas price that you’re gonna charge me?” Felicia clarifies that they were not going to upcharge for the fuel, but the customer remains adamant. “Okay, but I get 10 cents off every gallon because I’m a Cumbee’s member,” the customer says. Eventually, the customer agrees to let them put $50 of gas in the tank, saying, “And then you can find out what’s actually wrong with my car.”
“Those phone calls are never fun. I mean, telling a customer that the vehicle stopped driving because they ran out of gas isn’t something that they want to hear,” Felicia tells her viewers. “She has quite a bit of an attitude, which I get. Um, it’s embarrassing to get your vehicle towed into a dealership because you ran out of gas, but she’s not the only one. It happens more often than you would think.”
According to Car Parts, running your tank dry can have serious consequences for your vehicle. The fuel pump, for instance, relies on the fuel in the tank to stay cool and lubricated. Running on empty can not only overheat it and cause it to fail, but it can also lead the pump to suck up sediment from the bottom of the tank. That, in turn, can clog your fuel injectors. It is a stark reminder to keep an eye on your dashboard.
Felicia’s comment section was incredibly amused. One TikTok user commented, “I’d love to hear about my car ran out of gas cause that’s the cheapest fix out there lol.” Another user added, “I work in a dealership and the amount of cars that come in on the back of trucks that’s broken down all because they ran out of fuel.”
Over on Instagram, the commenters were pretty blunt. One user wrote, “Ma’am, we found the issue. There was an i-d-10-t error. We fixed that and everything’s good to go. It’s gonna be $2500.” Another joked, “The only person in the world that wants something to be wrong with their car.”
