With season one of True Detective now in the books, all focus turns towards HBO and who they will find to replace the crew that made the series’ first outing so memorable. In case you didn’t know, stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey will not be returning, and neither will director Cary Fukunaga. We haven’t heard anything official yet on who might be taking over for those three aforementioned talents, but this week an interesting, albeit probably false, rumor has surfaced.
Hollywood Life is reporting that Brad Pitt’s name has come up “many times” and that HBO would be “thrilled to have him on board.” Apparently, it’s just a matter of whether or not the actor can clear room in his schedule. If he can though, then he’ll likely be taking one of the lead roles.Â
Without any official source to back this up, it’s a bit hard to believe. True Detective might be all the rage right now, but I can’t really see Pitt signing on to do a TV show. I don’t think he’d be a great fit, either. He has played the detective role before, (see: Se7en), and has played it well, but I don’t think we’re quite at that stage yet where top of the A-list actors are marking their way down to TV.
While Harrelson and McConaughey were both big names and huge catches for HBO, they don’t have anywhere near as much star power as Pitt does. I also think it would be a bit jarring for audiences and take away from the show a bit if he were cast. McConaughey and Harrelson actually felt like they fit in with the series’ dark and gritty world. Pitt, on the other hand, would just stick out too much and draw attention away from the story, atmosphere and surrounding characters. Besides, there are several other well-known actors who would be much more suitable for this particular show.
