Earlier this week, NBC announced that they’d picked up the DC comics TV series Constantine for the upcoming 2014-2015 fall schedule, to the excitement of geeks everywhere. That excitement reached its peak this afternoon when NBC released the first trailer for the series, which you can check out below:

Constantine was brought to the big screen back in 2005, starring Keanu Reeves in the title role. Though that movie definitely has its advocates, it didn’t hold a candle to the source material and deviated in ways that left many die-hard Hellblazer fans unhappy. Luckily, the new series looks to rectify those mistakes.

Judging by the trailer alone, the show will stay loyal to the comics, right down to Constantine’s accent and crooked necktie. The trailer itself is a little messy, probably because it tries to explain most of the show’s supernatural elements in just three short minutes, but it still gives us a clear indication of what to expect when the series airs in the fall.

In addition to the trailer, we also have our first official synopsis, which gives a pretty thorough overview of the plot and who John Constantine is as a character.

Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Criminal Minds”) specializes in giving hell… hell.

Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, “True Blood”), the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight” — an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences — is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. Now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.
