It’s now been two weeks since Edgar Wright vacated the director’s chair of Marvel’s Ant-Man, which has sent the studio scrambling to find a replacement in time to start filming next month. They came close to signing deals with Adam McKay and Rawson Marshall Thurber, but both directors turned down the gig, which is rumored to have caused Marvel to expand their shortlist by adding Nicholas Stoller and Michael Dowse to the mix.
While they’re busy trying to find someone to fill Wright’s shoes, others have been left to cope with his departure. Though fellow Marvel directors Joss Whedon and James Gunn paid their respects, many of us have been wondering what the cast thinks of the shake-up. After all, the movie they signed up for was the Edgar Wright version, not the rewritten version that caused Wright to drop the film he’d been working on for nearly a decade.
Michael Douglas, who plays former Ant-Man Hank Pym, is the first actor to weigh in and state his disappointment with the news. During a recent interview with Schmoes Know, he said:
“I was… I was very disappointed. I am a big fan of his movies. It’s a very disappointing situation. Happened very late in the game. I don’t think anyone’s quite recovered. My hear goes out to Edgar – he’s been involved with the project for a long time. But he’s talented enough that you’ll be hearing a whole lot from him and I’m sure with a little vengeance.”
After he was cast, Douglas cited Wright’s script as a major reason for joining the film, so his disappointment is understandable. Now that we’ve heard from the first Ant-Man, I’m interested to see what his on-screen successor, Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd) has to say about the debacle.
Though there still isn’t a director in place, Ant-Man is barreling ever closer to its July 17th, 2015 release date. The film stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, and Patrick Wilson, and a new director should be chosen any day now.
