Payday 2, one of the most beloved co-op shooters of the last console generation, is on its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, developer Overkill Software announced today.

Entitled Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, the remaster has been touted as the definitive iteration of the game, replete with revamped graphics along with smooth, crisp gameplay.

According to 505 Interactive, the game’s publisher, the Crimewave Edition will boast “enhanced features and a stash of new bonus content, giving fans the ultimate PAYDAY experience.”

Payday 2 initially launched across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in August of 2013 and has been supported with a litany of paid and free DLC hitherto — which, incidentally, are also on their way to the console versions of the game following a spell of exclusivity on PC.

Since release, Overkill’s bombastic and ludicrously fun shooter has also been held in high regard by the gaming community at large, no thanks to the Crime.net component; essentially the game’s online spine that provides players with time-sensitive objectives and elaborate, multi-day heists.

Admittedly, Payday 2 joins an ever-expanding catalogue of software to make the transition from one generation to the list — including Tomb Raider, The Last of Us and, more recently, Deep Silver’s Metro Redux — but given the game’s rock solid concept, the added horsepower of new hardware could help address the title’s pernickety bugs.

Currently, Overkill Software’s Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is without a release date or price point at this time, but we can expect to learn more of the co-op shooter’s journey to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the coming weeks.
