HBO’s popular series True Blood may be ending after its upcoming seventh season, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing the last of Bon Temps. In an age full of reboots, sequels, spinoffs, and re-imaginings, I doubt any of us thought that True Blood would stay buried for long, but there’s no way we could have predicted the rebirth that composer Nathan Barr has in mind.
According to Barr, who wrote the instrumental scores for all seven seasons of the show, a True Blood musical is in the works. He doesn’t offer many details about it, but does warn that “there’s no guarantees” it will even happen. However, he’s pitched the idea to HBO and series creator Alan Ball, and hopes to get a workshop version of it finished to present to them in about a year.
He said that “the direction we’re heading in is really exciting,” and cites trimming down seven seasons worth of twists and turns as a particular challenge, though he hopes to “try to return to the roots of the show.”
Now that we’ve witnessed all kinds of supernatural hijinks befall the small town of Bon Temps, it’s hard to remember what those roots really were. However, since Barr has been with the series every step of the way, I doubt there’s anyone more qualified to find that out and bring it to life through song than him.
Funnily enough, True Blood’s own Stephen Moyer, who plays Bill on the show, helped Barr out with his presentation to HBO and Ball. Moyer showed that he has musical talents of his own in last year’s The Sound of Music live telecast on NBC. While I suspect that the True Blood musical will stand completely on its own from the series, Moyer’s involvement isn’t completely out of the question.
In any case, before we start looking that far ahead, we still need to see how things shake out for Sookie and her compatriots when the seventh season of True Blood airs on Sunday, June 22nd on HBO.
