After inspiring a generation and kickstarting a revolution against the power-mongering Capitol, Katniss Everdeen will make her final bow on the IMAX screen after Lionsgate Entertainment confirmed plans to release The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 on the large-scale format.

This news means that the final installment will be the first to be shown in 3D across North America, a decision that looks to have been influenced by the successful launch of Mockingjay – Part 1 in China last year. Here’s what director Francis Lawrence had to say about the partnership.

“I’m thrilled Mockingjay – Part 2 will be in IMAX theaters,” said Lawrence. “Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay – Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic.”

While the prospect of witnessing The Hunger Games‘ swan song on the IMAX screen is enticing, there’s no doubting that Lionsgate is hoping to capitalize on the fever-pitch hype for Katniss’ final outing and those all-important ticket sales. Plus, when you consider the fact that Part 1 accumulated an impressive $335 million without the extra surcharge from 3D sales, the studio will be hoping to go one step further and seen the YA franchise out with a financial bang.

Stepping away from the financial aspects for the time being and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will reunite Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Woddly Harrelson and Josh Hutcherson for another bout of post-apocalyptic action. Francis Lawrence’s sequel will close out the franchise – but maybe not for good – when it debuts on November 20.

For now, tell us, are you excited about the prospect of seeing Katniss’ final journey in the IMAX format? Let us know below.
