It’s been speculated for some time that Disney and Lucasfilm may proceed with plans to expand the Star Wars franchise with live-action television series that complement the forthcoming movies. And though those rumors remain unconfirmed and this should be taken with a sizable grain of salt, given the rumor’s source, a site called Cinelinx is throwing some wood on the fire by reporting that Disney is planning to continue its Marvel partnership with streaming giant Netflix by collaborating on as many as three live-action Star Wars series.
Cinelinx reported this same news a while back, but the twist now is that Disney and Lucasfilm may be fast-tracking development of the Star Wars series so as to use the same sets Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Rogue One are being shot on for the TV shows. If that’s the case, expect to hear more details on what those shows could entail sooner rather than later.
[zerg]If any substantial progress had been made on this front, it would be absolutely shocking that nothing concrete had come out before now, so it’s safe to say that any talks between the companies are in early stages. Still, with Disney and Netflix’s aggressive Marvel partnership, which includes four independent shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) that will converge in a team-up series (The Defenders), it would make a lot of sense to see the streaming service house a Star Wars TV universe as well.
Additionally, the only other real contender to broadcast Star Wars series would be Disney-owned ABC, which airs Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter, but the runaway success and critical acclaim Daredevil received certainly gives Netflix the edge.
