Late last month, we brought you the news that FX was taking a similar route to AMC’s strategy with Breaking Bad and creating a spinoff to its adorned Sons of Anarchy series, focusing on longstanding SAMCRO rivals, the Mayans.

It’s fair to say that a portion of the show’s loyal fanbase were apprehensive about the offshoot, though with series creator Kurt Sutter firmly on board, the showrunner is looking to dispel any lingering doubts about the nascent spinoff. In fact, while promoting his new series The Bastard Executioner with Deadline, Sutter hinted that the Mayan companion show could welcome iconic Sons of Anarchy characters back to the fray.

According to Sutter, the tone of FX’s project would be overly familiar to fans of the biker series, as it would focus on the same subculture. Indeed, by remaining in familiar territory, the SoA offshoot could incorporate various crossovers – like Jonathan Banks’ Mike Ehrmantraut in Better Call Saul, for instance.

“It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand,” Sutter said. “I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn’t step on the mythology that’s already been told. It doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn’t want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that … My intent is, over the hiatus I’ll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there.”

While this Sons of Anarchy spinoff is naturally taking precedent for Sutter, the showrunner didn’t rule out the possibility of one day spearheading a prequel series, exploring the origins of SAMCRO in the fallout of the Vietnam War.
