Though the announcement may have been slightly undermined by the leaked photos and videos depicting the early days on set, Marvel has formally confirmed that Doctor Strange has entered production in earnest, with Hannibal stalwart Mads Mikkelsen finally securing a place on Scott Derrickson’s mystical standalone feature.

Marking the beginning of a global shoot, the studio outlined some of the locations that will play host to Doctor Strange over the coming weeks and months, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal.

Orbiting around the titular Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel has appointed The Hobbit and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to portray the brilliant neurosurgeon who inadvertently stumbles upon a hidden dimension after a horrific accident.

Per Marvel:

“Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”

Building upon some of the mystical elements introduced in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man, we can readily expect Derrickson’s feature to plunge further into the Quantum Realm as the MCU begins to expand its horizons – both literally and figuratively. Joining Cumberbatch and now Mikkelsen for the feature are Chiwetel Ejiofor as big bad Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Michael Stuhlbarg.

In terms of the talent behind the camera, regular Marvel DP Ben Davis is on board for Doctor Strange, having already placed his cinematic stamp on Age of Ultron and last year’s swashbuckling Guardians of the Galaxy. Kevin Feige is once again producing, while executive producing duties will be leveraged between Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and, of course, Stan Lee.

Doctor Strange will introduce moviegoers to an entirely new dimension when Scott Derrickson’s feature lands in theaters on November 4, 2016.
