Ant-Man And The Wasp Director Wants To Take Marvel Sequel Into A Different Genre

Peyton Reed has already set out a mission statement to take Ant-Man and the Wasp to “weird, unique, and different territory,” but will that journey see the Marvel sequel venture into a different genre altogether? It certainly seems so.

While promoting today’s release of the original Ant-Man on home video, Reed took time to discuss the superhero follow-up with Comic Book Resources, teasing that Scott Lang’s next adventure will be a marked departure from the heist genre that underpinned this year’s smash hit.

Could Reed’s sequel venture more into sci-fi after the introduction of the Quantum Realm? Remember, this is a follow-up that’ll open in a post-Doctor Strange MCU.

“I think there’s probably going to be some aspects that maybe call back to the tone of [the first movie], but for Ant-Man and the Wasp, we have an entirely different template. We know what that template is, and we have an entirely different genre template for that movie. But it’s going to remain a surprise. But yes, that’s already been decided”

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) are a lock for Ant-Man and the Wasp, while we know that Michael Douglas has expressed his own interest in reprising the role of Hank Pym, but Reed is keen to attract another member of the original crew: Adam McKay. After penning the original screenplay in tandem with Paul Rudd, The Big Short director is seemingly on the verge of inking a deal. Here are Reed’s thoughts on the matter:

“Well, definitely, Paul [Rudd], and we’ve got [Andrew] Barrer and [Gabriel] Ferrari, who were not credited on the movie, but they’re our production writers, they’re coming back,” he explained. “And Adam’s going to come back in some capacity. A lot of it has to do with his schedule on [his new movie] The Big Short because he’s promoting that movie and is probably, I would think, well into the Oscar season. […]We talked about Ant-Man, and he’s psyched to come back. We want him back. It’s going to be a scheduling thing.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp is expected to scurry into theaters in time for July 6, 2018. Meanwhile, Peyton Reed’s original box office darling is available on home video from today, December 8.
