Jon Bernthal Weighs In On Rumored Spinoff Series For The Punisher

Frank Castle may be considered one of the more one-dimensional characters in Marvel comics, but rumors emerged not too long ago that The Punisher - set to be played by Fury and Wolf of Wall Street's Jon Bernthal in next month's Daredevil season 2 - would receive his own spinoff series after locking horns with Netflix's Man Without Fear.

Frank Castle may be considered one of the more one-dimensional characters in Marvel comics, but rumors emerged not too long ago that The Punisher – set to be played by Fury and Wolf of Wall Street‘s Jon Bernthal in next month’s Daredevil season 2 – would receive his own spinoff series after locking horns with Netflix’s Man Without Fear.

Alas, it appeared speculation got out of hand, after Marvel Television’s Executive VP Jeph Loeb cooled talk of the episodic offshoot, noting “that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening.”

For now, the conjecture remains, and that’s something that Jon Bernthal touched base on during a recent interview with Empire. Promoting the sophomore outing of Marvel’s Daredevil, the actor revealed his deep attachment to the unhinged mercenary, and why he’ll be ready should the studio ever issue the green light.

“This guy is very much burned into my heart and soul. I think about him all the time. And I look at it the same way Frank would look at it. I’m a soldier, man. If they call on me, I’ll stand to attention and I’ll be ready.”

Looking at the broader picture, Bernthal spoke so more about how his merciless antagonist arrives in Hell’s Kitchen guns blazing, and what that means for its watchful protector, Matt Murdock.

“Frank is so filled with rage and despair that this idea of a guy prancing around in a costume with little horns beating up bad guys is absurd to him,” says Bernthal. “It’s ripe for a character like Frank to come in and shit on that. What’s really interesting is that these guys are absolute enemies, but they start to understand each other.”

Daredevil season 2 premieres on March 18. As for the potential Punisher spinoff, all is not lost just yet.
