Early last week, Marvel and Sony let the cat slip out of the bag when it was rumored Jon Watt’s standalone Spidey movie would be titled Homecoming and sure enough, both parties have now officially announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming will scurry into theaters on July 7, 2017.

Word comes by way of the ongoing CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, where Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman nailed down the reboot’s title. A leaked domain name may have spoiled the surprise, but Rothman did tease that the subtitle alludes to Peter Parker’s journey and how he “is trying to find his way home.”

But perhaps most exciting of all is how Spider-Man: Homecoming will be introducing Tom Holland to the fray. Aside from a last-minute cameo in a recent trailer for Captain America: Civil War – Underoos! – we haven’t really seen Holland’s much younger rendition of Spidey in action.

That’ll all change soon, of course, given Civil War is just around the corner. Looking beyond 2016, however, and a recent report alleged that Marvel’s new Spider-Man will be locking horns with Adrian Toomes (AKA The Vulture) come 2017. Details remain thin on the ground at such an early stage, but supposing that the speculation is true, then the addition of Vulture ought to make for some truly, ahem, spectacular fight sequences.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to grace theaters on July 7, 2017. Before that, moviegoers will be introduced to Tom Holland’s wet-behind-the-ears version of Spidey via next month’s Captain America: Civil War.
