EA and DICE’s brutal WWI shooter Battlefield 1 may be high on everyone’s radar for now, but it’s been revealed today that Paramount Television has snapped up the rights for a live-action TV series based on the Battlefield franchise.
Joining forces with Anonymous Content – production house behind True Detective, Mr. Robot and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s epic thriller, The Revenant – details of the adaptation remain few and far between. No network is currently attached, for instance, but we do understand that Paramount’s deal spans spans broadcast, cable, premium cable, and streaming services, presenting a wide variety of options for the talent involved.
Fresh off producing Oscar favorite Spotlight, Michael Sugar is attached to executive produce the Battlefield TV series, and he offered up an official statement today in light of Paramount’s acquisition.
“Battlefield has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation,” Sugar said. “Together with EA and Paramount TV, we’ll develop the Battlefield TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly 15 years.
“Paramount TV actively seeks smart content from all sectors that will resonate with audiences and translate to compelling programming,” Paramount TV president Amy Powell said. “EA’s Battlefield has an incredibly dynamic narrative, coupled with a loyal fan base, which will allow us to bring this exciting and unique property to the small screen. We look forward to working with EA and Anonymous Content and thank Michael Sugar for his tenacity in bringing us this exciting project.”
It’s official: a live-action Battlefield series is in the works, but that’s really all we know at this early stage. Battlefield 1, meanwhile, deploys across PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 21.
