With a finish line now firmly in sight, Game of Thrones fans are slowly beginning to brace themselves for the inevitable conclusion to HBO’s fantasy flagship.
That’s an air of bittersweet sadness that extends to the cast, too, with series stalwart Sophie Turner admitting to Variety that “it’s really sad” Game of Thrones is beginning to wind down, even if the actress was well aware the network had mapped out plans for “seven or eight seasons” from the off.
“We kinda always knew it would be seven or eight seasons. It’s really sad. It’s really uncomfortable to think about my life without ‘Game of Thrones.’ Not only has it been like a family — going to see a family every summer — but it’s also been a safety net. When I finish this I don’t actually know what’s going to happen. I might slip into a deep, deep depression because I won’t know what to do with myself. It’s going to be very strange. I feel people are going to miss it dearly.”
As the proverbial chess pieces begin to come together for a sure-to-be epic two-season finale, the mere thought of all the dramatic payoff is enough to send long-time fans into a tailspin. When quizzed about her thoughts on Sansa’s own fate, Turner admitted that she doesn’t know simply “because of the way last season left off. There are so many options,” she teased. “She could run with Littlefinger and become a villain and sadistic. Or she could also team up with her brother Jon.”
If Turner had her say on a potential Sansa death scene, the actress joked that it would involve “a long, slow episode-lasting death, where it’s just one long scene of my death and no one else. And it’s going to be the last episode of the last season.”
Game of Thrones returns in the summer of 2017 and, if Joe Dempsie has his way, may well herald the return of the wayward Baratheon, Gendry.
