Casting is now underway for the penultimate season of Game of Thrones, and it appears Jim Broadbent – star of Moulin Rouge, Gangs of New York and Eddie the Eagle – is the first fresh face to enlist for HBO’s political flagship as it nears its hotly-anticipated climax.
News of Broadbent joining the show’s huge ensemble cast comes to us via Entertainment Weekly, although in typical GoT fashion, there’s nary a mention of which character he’ll be playing come 2017. That certainly won’t quell fan speculation, of course, and it’ll be interesting to see if any of those early theories are on point. All we know at this time is that the Oscar-winner has landed a “significant” role in Game of Thrones season 7 but beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.
Outside of wild speculation, let’s recap the facts. Game of Thrones season 7 will comprise seven episodes in total when it hits HBO in the summer of 2017, laying the groundwork for a grand finale that is said to clock in at eight episodes. Northern Ireland, Spain and Iceland are among the countries set to play host to season 7 in the coming months, though given the thick veil of secrecy that so often engulfs HBO’s prized asset during production, don’t expect much in the way of set photos until the official tidbits begin surfacing towards the end of the year.
Game of Thrones will return for a seventh season in the summer of 2017 and – surprise! – it’ll be one of the bleakest seasons yet.
