Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott have both landed major roles in House of Cards season 5, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix didn’t disclose the identity of their characters at this time, only that Clarkson and Scott will portray major players that walk Washington’s corridors of power. As for the rest of the cast, Kevin Spacey is back as power-mongering POTUS Frank Underwood, who will be fending off adversaries old and new alongside Claire (Robin Wright). Due to his commitment to Marvel’s Luke Cage, Mahershala Ali has expressed some doubt about the possibility of reprising as stoic lobbyist Remy Danton, though we’ll be keeping an eye on that one as we approach season 5’s premiere.
Meanwhile, today’s casting coup heralds Clarkson’s first foray onto the small-screen in some time – a guest role on HBO’s Six Feet Under notwithstanding – and the actress is perhaps best known for her Oscar-nominated turn in Pieces of April. As for Scott, viewers may recognize the 55-year-old from USA Network’s Royal Pains, while his film credits also comprise minor roles in both The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Chief writers Frank Pugliese and Melissa James will steer House of Cards season 5 onto Netflix in early 2017, after taking point at the helm in place of Beau Willimon. If previous release windows are any indication, subscribers can look forward to the next chapter in the Underwood saga rolling onto the online streamer in late February/early March.
