Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch’s dashing magician is the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and after keeping fans on tenterhooks with not one, but two post-credits scenes, all eyes are slowly beginning to turn toward Avengers: Infinity War. Pegged for 2018, both Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel will surely be the biggest Marvel event movies to date, opening up the field for a stacked roster of costumed heroes. When it comes to how Doctor Strange fits into proceedings, Marvel boss Kevin Feige merely teased his role while chatting to /Film.

Today you confirmed that Strange is gonna be in Infinity War. It seems to me if he has an Infinity Stone around his neck then it’s gonna be a very personal battle for him going forward. Can you say anything about that?

Feige: Only that you are correct. Yes.

When quizzed about the Time Stone in particular, Feige noted that, much like the Vision before him, Doctor Strange will face a more personal battle by the time Infinity War rolls around.

Yeah. I mean, I think that’s there are a couple of reasons for that. One is as you’re introducing the fourth and fifth versions of these MacGuffins that we’ve been playing with for a long time, you wanna do something different with them and not just have them be an object passed around. So the notion that something is inherent in the literal body of one of your lead heroes is interesting. And the idea that the Eye of Agamotto’s a great MacGuffin over the, great relic over the course of Doctor Strange comics anyway.

That was a; that seemed like a fun potential to say you know why it can do a lot of those things? Because it’s this other thing. As we then get into future movies, it also becomes, you know, certainly ripe with potential for conflict and drama that it’s not something buried in a cave it’s something he has to go get, but rather something in a beloved hero’s head.

Doctor Strange is in theaters now (our review), while moviegoers can look forward to Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme returning to the fray in time for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. In fact, if an earlier report holds true, Benedict Cumberbatch could even hold a small cameo role in next year’s Thor: Ragnarok.
