Ryan Reynolds Pleaded With Fox To Make Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds didn't exactly have an easy time getting into the superhero business. Not that it was his fault, mind you, but the actor had two massive misfires with both his role as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and then as the titular hero in Green Lantern. Thankfully, redemption finally came when the Merc with a Mouth got his own solo outing, which turned out to be one of 2016's very best films.

Getting 20th Century Fox to give the green light to a Deadpool movie though, let alone one with an R rating, was no easy task. And in a recent interview with GQ, Reynolds recounts how he had begged the studio to make it before he signed on for Green Lantern, but they wouldn’t budge.

“I wrote a letter to my executive at Fox saying, ‘I’m gonna take this movie Green Lantern if you guys aren’t gonna make Deadpool. I’m at the altar, about to say ‘I do’ to somebody else, but tell me you want to spend the rest of your life with me, because I want to spend the rest of my life with you,’” he recalled. “They said, ‘Unfortunately, we can’t green-light that movie, and I don’t think it’s ever going to get green-lit.’ So I was like, Okay, I’m gonna go move on with my life, then, I guess.”

GQ wasn’t the only one who got the actor’s thought on Green Lantern, as he also spoke about it this past weekend at a Q&A screening for Deadpool, saying that the problem with the film ultimately lay in the script.

“You just go back to script, script, script,” Reynolds said. “[On Green Lantern] we did not have a working script until we were halfway through shooting. That is a handicap, there’s nothing you can do about that. And that’s just the nature of this business oftentimes, it’s a poster and release date first, start shooting and we’ll figure out the rest as we go. And it’s just, it’s insane. It’s hard for everyone. Everyone that worked on that movie gave their last drop of blood.”

Circling back to the Merc with a Mouth though, and it seems that despite the departure of both director Tim Miller and composer Junkie XL, everything is still on track over at 20th Century Fox. In fact, the studio has already started talking about Deadpool 3, stating that they hope to introduce the X-Force at that point.

Production on the sequel has been pushed a bit as the search for a new director gets underway, but aside from that, everything’s looking good for Ryan Reynolds to continue on with his well deserved superhero redemption.
