Mark Hamill Says He Loved Jared Leto’s Joker In Suicide Squad

It’s no secret by now that Jared Leto’s take on The Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was divisive, to say the least. That’s not necessarily the actor’s fault, however, as a lot of his scenes didn’t make it into the final film – something the Extended Cut is looking to fix. Even with the additional footage though, we never really get a properly fleshed out version of the iconic villain and ultimately, we’re left hoping that future sequels will do him justice.

One actor who’s take on the character certainly isn’t divisive though is Mark Hamill, who many consider to be one of, if not, the best Joker that we’ve seen yet. After all, he’s played the Clown Prince of Crime for longer than anyone else and has delivered an absolutely brilliant take on him throughout the years. As such, it’s no surprise that when Polygon sat down with him for an interview, they asked for his thoughts on Leto’s work in Suicide Squad.

Hamill was quick to shower praise on the actor, saying that he loved Jared’s performance before adding that he’s never really seen a take on The Joker that he thought was terrible. So take that as you will. He did mention something interesting, however, as he said that there really isn’t one definitive version of the villain:

“Everyone brings a different spin to the character and you have to look at each script separately,” Hamill said. “I don’t think there’s a definitive version of the Joker and I don’t think there can be. It’s like Hamlet, really. It’ll be constantly redefined.”

Despite the mixed reception to Suicide Squad, it’s clear that Warner Bros. isn’t done with the property just yet. After all, it scored an impressive take at the box office and rumors keep popping up that point to Leto’s Joker showing up in Ben Affleck’s The Batman.

How the studio will develop the franchise from here remains to be seen, but we’re definitely on board with them giving us more of the Clown Prince of Crime. He may not have lived up to expectations during his first outing, but the film still did lay an intriguing foundation for the character that we’d love to see explored further in the inevitable sequels.
