Last night, Deadpool 2 finally found a director in the form of David Leitch. It put an end to a search that first began when Tim Miller departed several weeks ago, and while Leitch was apparently an early candidate to replace him, he wasn’t the only one Fox had their eye on.
Buried in The Hollywood Reporter’s story about Leitch signing on was an interesting tidbit of information which revealed that aside from the John Wick co-director, the studio had also scheduled meetings with Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell), Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) and Magnus Martens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Of course, none of those individuals got the job, but could one of them end up behind the camera for Deadpool 3?
It may be premature to start talking about the third outing already, but we do know that Fox has begun to make plans for it, and they hope to introduce the X-Force at that point. We also know that they intend to hire someone new for Deadpool 3, which means they’ll need a replacement for Leitch. Given that they were eyeing the three aforementioned individuals for the upcoming sequel, it would make sense that they might go back to one of them for the third instalment.
That’s purely speculation at this point, but it’s not too farfetched to think that Fox would at least consider those directors for the threequel. Whether or not the scheduling will work out, or if they’ll even still be interested when the time comes is another matter entirely, but we certainly wouldn’t object to seeing someone like Drew Goddard behind the camera. Or even Rupert Sanders for that matter, as he’s shown off an impressive visual style thus far in his career and looks set to deliver a stunning adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.
Again though, this is all just speculation and until we hear something more concrete (which won’t be for a very long time), it will remain as just that. Still, it’s fun to think about and we’ll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground for any further developments on Deadpool 3.
