With just a few weeks to go now before Sherlock returns to television, PBS Masterpiece has dropped a brand new trailer today that teases a dark and intense season for the iconic detective, one where he’ll come up against his toughest opponent yet.
“The roads we walk have demons beneath and yours have been waiting for a very long time,” says a voiceover at the start of the preview, teeing up what looks to be another gripping outing for the fan-favorite show, as we’ll witness an epic clash between Sherlock and Culverton Smith – played here by Toby Jones – who looks rather menacing in the trailer above.
Considered to be the series’ darkest villain to date, co-showrunner Steven Moffat has warned fans well in advance that Smith is a truly horrific character, and though the titular protagonist had enjoyed a warped sense of competition from his run-in with Moriarty, Benedict Cumberbatch’s lead is said to be completely appalled by Smith’s actions. Strap in, folks – things are going to get a bit bumpy.
Season 4 of Sherlock will kick off with “The Six Thatchers” on January 1st, 2017. You better make sure to tune in, too, as it may be the last hurrah for the character. Cumberbatch has revealed that his increasingly busy film schedule may just put an end to his time on the show, and given how well his debut as Marvel’s Doctor Strange was received earlier this year, we’re inclined to believe him.
