By now, we’re all well aware that Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s chief creative officer, is a very busy man. Having written definitive tales such as Blackest Night, Infinite Crisis, and Flashpoint were but among a few things that made him the right person for the job to oversee DC’s various ventures into film, television, and video games. Heck, he even recently teased that there’s more to come in the new year regarding the publisher’s dominance of the small screen.
As awesome as the prospect of seeing other superheroes brought to life within the next twelve months may be, not having Johns pen any comics has left quite the void. Thankfully, he’s cooking something up and, while it’s not entirely clear what that may be, his cryptic Tweet strongly hints that it’s something having to do with Watchmen.
And 1) Writing comics again… stay tuned! Happy New Year!!! pic.twitter.com/zUvs4NIXhM

Sure, the social media post may be a bit vague, but using Doctor Manhattan as a teaser is incredibly telling. Let’s not forget that the Alan Moore created character’s presence was strongly hinted at in DC Universe Rebirth #1, which was the brainchild of Johns. Since then, many have hypothesized that the blue-skinned fellow who has a complete disregard for clothing was the one to manipulate the timestream.
With theories running rampant that this will yield a full blown sequel to Watchmen or something akin to the Before Watchmen prequel books that were released a few years ago, we can’t deny the possibility of either of those coming to fruition, but our better judgment says it’s probably something that will tie those characters into the DC Universe as a whole. Furthermore, don’t be shocked if the sleuthing done by Batman and the Flash has something to do with it.
No matter the outcome, fans will undoubtedly be on both sides of the fence when it comes to Watchmen no longer being a standalone work. Should Johns indeed expand upon its mythology, our fingers will remain crossed in hopes that he finds the time to also write Batman: Earth One, Volume 3.
