It’s no secret that fans aren’t exactly pleased with Henry Cavill’s Superman over in the DCEU. That’s not to say it’s the actor’s fault, but the gloomy, darker version of the character that the studio has presented us with isn’t really what people want to see. You can imagine, then, that when Tyler Hoechlin suited up as the Big Blue Boy Scout in The CW’s Supergirl, we were relieved to get a much more cheerful and lighter version of Supes.
Though he only appeared on the show for a couple of episodes, the actor made a big impact. His Man of Steel went over very well with fans and led many to wonder if he’d one day get his own spinoff series. At the time, the network wouldn’t comment on where we’ll see the iconic hero next, and while we assume that they’re not done with him for good, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting him back any time soon.
The news comes from CW president Mark Pedowitz, who made it pretty clear that not only will he not get his own show, but they don’t even have plans for him to appear in Supergirl again.
Tyler did a great job. There’s no plan to do a series, though. There are no plans at the moment for him to return [to Supergirl].
Truth be told, we have a hard time believing what Pedowitz says here. Fans reacted so well to Hoechlin in the role that you’d think The CW would already be planning more for him – be it in a spinoff or in Supergirl. Most likely, the network just hasn’t decided exactly how they’re going to take things from here and as such, don’t want to get us too excited yet.
Then again, for all we know, maybe DC is causing some trouble. After all, they do need to give approval for The CW to use Superman and perhaps they don’t want to let the character show up on the small screen again. It’s tough to say what’s going on behind the scenes, but we do know that we’d definitely love to see more of Hoechlin’s take on Superman. A spinoff may not be the best route to go, given how crowded the network’s slate already is, but there’s no reason that he can’t stop by and help Kara out every now and then, right?
