Corey Hawkins On His Walking Dead Role: “We Left It Open”

Corey Hawkins is quickly making his way up the Hollywood ladder of fame. After truly breaking out in 2015's Straight Outta Compton, it's been one high profile role after another for the talented young actor. With both 24: Legacy and Kong: Skull Island on the horizon, not to mention a few other projects that are still brewing in development, you might think that Hawkins may not have any time to return to some of his older roles, but that doesn't seem to the case.

First having appeared on The Walking Dead during season 6, Hawkins’ character Heath was never a major player, but fans quickly took to him and though he doesn’t pop up all that often, we always enjoy seeing the actor appear on the show. Last time we saw him was in season 7’s “Swear,” where his fate was left up in the air, and given that the midseason finale back in December chose not to give us any hints as to what he may be up to, fans assumed he’d probably been written out given his upcoming slate.

According to Hawkins though, that’s not entirely true and while speaking to IGN, the actor said that him and showrunner Scott M. Gimple actually left things open.

“It’s usually very finite, right? But me and [showrunner] Scott [Gimple] have had a lot of conversations; Scott has been great in terms of asking and talking and really trying to figure out where the character was coming from and going, and you know, professional things take you where they take you, that’s normal. But we left it open … so I will just say there is always a possibility, there is always a way.”

That’s a pretty vague answer, but at least he doesn’t rule out a return. Our guess is that he eventually will come back, but it’ll be for a very short period of time just to wrap up his arc. After all, there are far too many characters on The Walking Dead as is and though Heath has been a hit with fans, there really isn’t much room for him at this point.

Then again, he could also be dead and perhaps the actor just doesn’t want to spoil that. Right now, it’s hard to say, but we certainly hope that we at least get a satisfying conclusion to his arc, even if Hawkins has moved on to pastures anew.

Tell us, what do you think Heath is up to on The Walking Dead? Will we ever see him again? Sound off down below with your thoughts!
