Star Trek: Discovery may have cast James Frain in the role of Spock’s father, Sarek, but CBS’ small-screen reboot isn’t ready to leave the docking bay just yet.
Originally slated to debut in February 2017, before being pushed back to May following the departure of showrunner Bryan Fuller, the CBS All Access series is now without a premiere date at the time of writing, something the network attributes to the show’s “ambitious” nature.
Here’s the official statement:
“Production on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created. This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show. We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.”
Truth be told, it’s been a bumpy road for Star Trek: Discovery. After losing Fuller at the helm – he’ll still write the pilot episode, mind you – CBS elected Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg as co-showrunners. That was back in October and since then, Discovery has been busy filling out its ensemble cast. It’s now comprised of Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo and The Walking Dead‘s Sonequa Martin-Green, who landed the lead role of a lieutenant commander aboard the U.S.S. Discovery late last year.
CBS will finally order Star Trek Discovery into production sometime next week, leading us to believe that the sci-fi series will relocate to fall 2017 after being yanked from its original May window. We’ll let you know if and when the network announces a new premiere date.
