There are a lot of unanswered questions about Logan right now, including how exactly it fits into the X-Men Universe. The whole thing is a pretty convoluted mess at this stage, to put it mildly, and while we wait to see if Wolverine dies or Deadpool makes an appearance, at least one of our burning questions has now been answered.
If you’ve been wondering why Patrick Stewart’s Professor X has hair after the story behind its loss was revealed in X-Men: Apocalypse, then Logan director James Mangold has now provided an answer. Believe it or not, it’s actually a pretty convincing one, too, despite the filmmaker acknowledging the fact that it “could be kind of sacrilege.”
“The theory was that he originally lost all his hair because it’s just too damn busy [in his head] to grow hair – the idea for me was, well, maybe there’s a little fringe on there, because things are slowing down mentally.”
That’s a very interesting explanation, and while some fans will no doubt find fault with just how closely to the character’s comic book history this adheres, you have to hand it to Mangold for putting so much thought into what’s really a relatively minor cosmetic change.
A key player in the X-Men franchise for a very long time, it’s possible that Logan will mark the end of Stewart’s tenure as Charles Xavier – all signs seem to point to it. Whatever happens though, seeing how he interacts with both Wolverine and the young X-23 now that he’s a shadow of his former self should be very interesting, regardless of what his hair looks like.
