By way of IGN’s series of First videos, NetherRealm has unveiled Black Canary for the upcoming beat ’em up, showcasing the hero’s trademark Canary Cry being performed on various unfortunate foes. From the footage provided, it looks as if she’ll be a ‘zoner’ in Injustice 2, able to keep opponents at bay with ear-splitting sound waves, waiting for an opening before moving in for a series of juggle combos.

Joining the likes of Batman, Robin, Harley Quinn and Blue Beetle, it’s fair to assume that Black Canary’s inclusion in Injustice 2 forms part of NetherRealm boss Ed Boon’s commitment to including more obscure characters from DC’s back catalog than the original game did. The superhero first appeared in Flash Comics #86 (1947) alongside the titular hero and has since gone on to appear in numerous publications, including Justice League of America.

This reveal is somewhat surprising, as we were kind of expecting some of the other familiar faces shown in last month‘s trailer to be announced today instead of Black Canary, but there’s still plenty of time for the likes of Bane and Poison Ivy to be confirmed as playable. Either way, today’s reveal is a nice addition to the game’s ranks and should please fans.

Injustice 2 releases for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 16.
