One new addition to the cast that’s largely remained under the radar up until now is the gold-skinned Ayesha, who will be played by Elizabeth Debicki. We know that she’ll be a villain and will be based on the Marvel Comics character with more names than Daenerys from Game of Thrones, but up to this point, we weren’t really sure how she’d factor into the plot of the Marvel sequel.

Now, Kevin Feige has spilled some intriguing new details on Ayesha, while also revealing the reason the Guardians wind up making an enemy of the “pompous” alien. It turns out that Ayesha’s people, The Sovereign, hire Star-Lord and co. for a job, which all goes well enough until Rocket decides to steal a couple of very powerful batteries.

The Sovereign are kind of dicks anyway. They’re very pompous, and they’re gold and they’re easily offended, which we’re also told early in this sequence, and that there’s a very particular way you need to deal with them, and you need to speak with them and you need to be delicate, which is not easy for the Guardians, and certainly not easy when Rocket reveals that he’s snagged these things right out from under them, and that creates a bit of strife for them as the Sovereign end up chasing after them, less because they want those three batteries back, but more because how dare they insult the great Sovereign people.

In the comics, Ayesha (or “Her”) has close ties with a character we’ve yet to see make his Marvel movie debut, Adam Warlock (AKA “Him”). Though we still don’t have any confirmation that Warlock will ever be adapted for the big screen, in a separate interview, director James Gunn suggests that the two might well share a similar bond if it was to happen someday:

[It’s] totally possible that Ayesha and Adam Warlock are related in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’re created in pods.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to be released this May, so expect one final trailer to drop before then. In the meantime, be sure to leave us with a comment letting us know what you’re hoping to see from the upcoming blockbuster.
