Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the next big superhero movie of 2017, something that a groovy series of character posters recently made clear, and one of the most exciting things about the sequel is the fact that it stars legendary actors Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone.

The former plays Ego the Living Planet, the father of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. Stallone’s role, meanwhile, is a complete mystery. We know that he’ll have a close relationship with a character played by Michael Rosenbaum, but for now, that’s all we have to go on. However, in a new interview, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has revealed that both Ego and Stallone’s mystery character could be around for the long haul in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“This is definitely not a one-off [for them]. They’re both characters that we’ve taken a lot of time to develop, and they’re a big part of the MCU now.”

So, it definitely sounds like we should expect to see these two again somewhere down the line. Whether that’s in Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or something else entirely though is unknown. What Gunn says makes sense though, as killing off a character with as much potential as Ego would be a huge mistake, so it’s nice to know that he’s coming back. Likewise, having a legend like Stallone in the franchise can only be a good thing and Marvel’s smart to keep him around for the more than just one appearance.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if we’ll learn much more about either of these characters until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is released in May, especially now that the final trailer has debuted. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it should only help increase excitement for the Marvel sequel, one which might just be the greatest movie of all-time – if Chris Pratt is to be believed, that is.
