It was recently announced that Bryan Fuller’s highly anticipated small screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods would debut on Starz on Sunday, April 30 at 9:00 P.M., and following the show’s extremely positive premiere at SXSW earlier this month, promotion has now kicked up a few gears. Hot on the heels of a new trailer and a batch of colorful character posters, Starz has officially released the opening credits sequence online.

Produced by FremantleMedia North America and created by Elastic, the credits offer a somewhat startling introduction to the weird and wonderful world of Gaiman’s fantasy/horror, as various neon-lit totems, creatures and surreal spins on everyday items accompany the haunting music. Much of the imagery on display will be familiar to fans of Gaiman’s source material, as it represents some of the principal old and new gods that we’ll be introduced to over the course of the series.

Here’s what Fuller had to say about the superb sequence:

Is it strange to want action figures from a main title sequence? Crucified astronauts, neon cowboys and S&M centaurs, we bow to Elastic and their spectacular vision. A totem of godly visions we didn’t know we needed to worship until they showed us the light with this clarion call to the ‘American Gods’,”

He’s gushing, but he’s not wrong.

Because there’s only one novel (not counting the Anansi Boys spinoff), fans have been curious about how many seasons of American Gods we’ll see. Right now, it’s difficult to say, but the show has already added a few characters that didn’t appear in the source material (including Corbin Bernsen’s Vulcan), so there’s a decent chance they’re planning to expand the mythology beyond the book.

Time will tell, but either way, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing what Starz has done with American Gods when it premieres next month.
