Thor: Ragnarok Will Go In Fun And Weird Directions

Thor: Ragnarok is going to be different. That much we can say with absolute certainty, and if anyone still has any doubts about it, we’d direct you to the film’s first trailer, which more than proved that the God of Thunder’s third solo outing will be a far cry from what came before – and that can only be a good thing. That’s not to say that Thor and its sequel, The Dark World, were bad, but they do stand as some of the MCU’s weaker entries. As such, it’s exciting to hear that things will be changing pretty significantly for Ragnarok.

While we don’t know how far outside their comfort zone Marvel is willing to travel just yet, the upcoming threequel certainly seems like a pretty big departure for the studio, with a wacky tone and a lot more humor than we’ve seen in any of their movies to date. Will it pay off in the end? That remains to be seen, but the whole buddy road trip element to Ragnarok seems like it could really work and while it may be tricky balancing the different tones, director Taika Waititi is more than up for the challenge.

So far, there’ve been a lot of comparisons made between Thor’s next outing and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and it’s not hard to see why. According to Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige though, Ragnarok will be more of its own thing, noting that Waititi has brought a really unique point of view to it.

“Well, I think I would say it’s, and as people see more of Ragnarok, it’s a Taika tone more than a Guardians tone. He’s really adding a very unique point of view to it, but certainly the success of Guardians just boosted our confidence to continue to go in new, fun, weird directions.”

That’s definitely reassuring to hear, as like we said above, the first two Thor films were fairly mediocre affairs. A new, fun and weird direction is exactly where the franchise needs to head at this point and with its cosmic elements, colorful visuals and wacky sense of humor, Ragnarok should have no trouble sticking out from the crowd and becoming one of the more unique comic book movie offerings of the last few years.

If nothing else, the interest from fans is definitely there, with the recent trailer breaking numerous viewership records and getting everyone talking. Of course, that’s not always an indication of how well a film will do once it arrives in theatres, but if Thor: Ragnarok can deliver on even half of the fun that the trailer teased, then we’ll surely be in for a good time.
