Deadline has the scoop, confirming that the raging war between the old gods and the new will spill over into next year – a mid-2018 release window is reportedly the target – though it’s unclear how many episodes season 2 will entail. Today’s report goes on to note that the sophomore run of American Gods will stretch for at least eight instalments, to bring it in line with the first, but there’s every chance the Powers That Be will mull over the possibility of an extension.

Returning at the helm are co-showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, with American Gods author Neil Gaiman back to executive produce. On the other side of the lens, John Wick fan-favorite Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle will reprise as Mr. Wednesday and Ricky Moon, respectively, and the official statement from Starz is as follows:

Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with American Gods, and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods.

Craig Cegielski, co-CEO of FremantleMedia North America, pitched in to highlight the ground-breaking nature of American Gods.

American Gods has been a ground-breaking series born out of belief and it’s thrilling to be partnered with Starz to continue this ambitious story. Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have ignited a conversation through cinematic magic, presented through a diverse ensemble of actors that continue to keep us engaged and inspired.

Two weeks on from its landmark debut – the American Gods pilot enjoyed one of the best premieres for a Starz original series with almost 1 million viewers – the network has officially nailed down plans for a second season. Look for it to descend onto the small screen mid-way through 2018.
