James Gunn’s wildly successful sequel has been playing in U.S. theaters for little over a month, and is now within touching distance of Hollywood’s exclusive billion dollar club – at the time of writing, Guardians 2 has amassed $817 million worldwide, and has been tipped to close out its theatrical run in the region of $950m-$1 billion. Stay tuned for more on that total box office cume as time wears on.

Star-Lord and the gang are as popular as ever, then – Telltale’s ongoing action-adventure series has certainly helped embed the Guardians in video game culture, too – and as part of his latest deluge of concept art, Andy Park has shifted the focus over to Papa Quill: Ego, the Living Planet. To date, Park has shared early designs for Baby Groot, along with Nebula and Gamora, the warring step-sisters of Thanos. This time around, though, the talented artist has shifted the focus over to an alternate Ego.

It’s a piece that paints Kurt Russell’s unruly deity in a slightly different light, seen here raising a glass while perched on a dark purple throne of some sort. It also bears a rather striking resemblance to Charlie Hunnam as he appears in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Guy Ritchie’s fantasy reboot that flopped quite spectacularly when it galloped into theaters late last month.

Per Instagram:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted in U.S. theaters early last month to rave reviews and a suitably stellar opening weekend. Not one to rest on his laurels, writer-director James Gunn is already working on composing Vol. 3 of Star-Lord’s galactic adventure, which will seemingly usher in a new era for both the Guardians and the overarching MCU.
