Elodie Yung’s Elektra enjoyed quite the arc during Daredevil‘s second season.
Introduced as a former flame to Matt Murdock’s Man Without Fear, the iconic character vacillated between ally and villain numerous times, before Elektra was left in the company of The Hand – presumably so that she could be resurrected as the super weapon known simply as Black Sky.
That leaves Charlie Cox’s titular lead in quite the predicament, who will seemingly be in a state of semi-retirement (exile, even?) when The Defenders begins on August 18th. A “fractured” relationship with Foggy only exacerbates matters, and we’re now learning that Elektra will ostensibly be re-introduced as a “completely new character” once Netflix’s team-up series gets underway. That’s not all that surprising, really, particularly when you consider that Elodie Yung’s elusive ninja just had a brush with death, but it does raise some interesting questions as to how Matt Murdock will react to Elektra’s surprise return. Will she prove to be Daredevil’s Achilles heel once more? Time will tell.
During a roundtable interview attended by Cinema Blend, Yung spoke more about Elektra’s radical transition from Daredevil season 2 to The Defenders, and what it was like to slip back into a new outfit. Not only that, but as rumored, it appears as though she’ll become the pawn of Alexandra Reid (Sigourney Weaver) when the shit hits the fan.
It was a great idea. I think they got really inspired by the comics. Elektra dies and comes back in a new outfit, and she’s changed. It was a really cool and interesting thing to have Elektra again, just being a completely new character. Almost, because she doesn’t remember anything. And so exploring kind of a new character was exciting for me. So this is where we start. And then Alexandra takes over this new Elektra and forges her the way she wants her to be, if that makes sense. So that’s the start.
The Defenders begins on August 18th. Further afield, Netflix and Marvel have already started production on new seasons of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, while the third instalment of Daredevil is also said to be in the mix. Iron Fist, meanwhile, was granted a second season during SDCC, along with a new showrunner in the form of Raven Metzner (Elektra).
