Marvel Has Begun Working On Several Cosmic MCU Movies For After Guardians 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the "beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe," according to writer-director James Gunn. It's a journey that began with the release of the original Guardians of the Galaxy three years ago, and though it was deemed to be an exercise in risk-taking at the outset, Star-Lord and the gang have since cemented their place as some of the most likable characters populating the MCU - the sheer love and fandom generated by Baby Groot alone is a testimony to the Guardians' prevalence. And with the oncoming third movie in the Guardians trilogy, Gunn looks set to take things to another level.

It’s a journey that began with the release of the original Guardians of the Galaxy three years ago, and though it was deemed to be an exercise in risk-taking at the outset, Star-Lord and the gang have since cemented their place as some of the most likable characters populating the MCU – the sheer love and fandom generated by Baby Groot alone is a testimony to the team’s prevalence. And with the oncoming third movie in the Guardians trilogy, Gunn looks set to take things to another level.

But what comes after that? After all, while Guardians might be the first successful cosmic comic book movie franchise, superheroes have been venturing into space for decades on the page. Ever since Superman, an alien from a far-off planet, kicked off the genre back in 1938, hardcore science fiction and superheroism have gone hand in hand. It’s just taken a good long while for the movies to embrace this side of comic books. Now, however, it’s starting to happen and as we’ve heard countless times already, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a whole lot more cosmic in the years to come.

In fact, according to Gunn himself, scripts are already being worked on for future films from the studio that are set to explore the cosmic side of the universe in a bit more depth. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, here’s what the director shared:

“Those scripts are already in the works. Kevin and I talk about it all the time, we just had a meeting today. Discussing what is the next iteration of cosmic characters and where are the characters that we’ve already created going to go in the next batch of films.”

With both Adam Warlock and Quasar already being hinted at (or confirmed, in the case of the former) for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s clear that the cosmic side of the MCU is about to get its fair share of the spotlight as the franchise continues to develop. Not to mention that there’s also been countless rumors regarding characters like Beta Ray Bill, Nova and more all getting ready to make their big screen debut soon, which would no doubt happen in one of these films that are being planned.

Of course, we still don’t have much in the way of firm details on Marvel’s plans for the cosmic side of their cinematic universe, but it’s obviously something they tend to explore more heavily moving forward and given the tremendous success they’ve seen with the Guardians of the Galaxy films, it’s probably a good route to head down.
