Though most of the focus right now when it comes to the DC Extended Universe is on Justice League – and understandably so – there’s a hushed excitement starting to build around Batgirl. Why? Well, for one, the character deserves a proper big screen adaptation, but aside from that, Wonder Woman has now proven that female superheroes can flourish at the box office.
Of course, there’s also the fact that Joss Whedon is behind the camera here, and as such, it’s very likely that this is going to be a big hit for the franchise. Granted, we don’t know too much about it just yet, but with reports saying that the director is eyeing The New 52 for inspiration and hoping to cast an unknown, it seems like Batgirl could soon become one of the DCEU’s most promising projects. And as it turns out, we have Whedon to thank for the movie even happening in the first place.
You see, the only reason Warner Bros. is making a Batgirl film is because of the director’s initial pitch, meaning it wasn’t in their plans beforehand. According to Variety, the studio hadn’t even considered it “until Whedon confessed to his love of Barbara Gordon and her masked alter ego.” It was only at that point when they gave the green light for the director to move forward with it.
While not a groundbreaking reveal by any means, it is interesting and if nothing else, this shows that Warner Bros. is willing to be flexible and open with their plans for the DC Extended Universe. Whether that’s a good thing or bad thing though depends on who you ask. After all, there’ve been some pretty surprising developments in the franchise lately which have people questioning whether or not the studio really knows what they’re doing.
Regardless, we can certainly say that we’re excited about Joss Whedon’s Batgirl movie and though it might be some time before we hear anything concrete about it – given that the director’s currently tied up with Justice League – we’re confident that he’ll be able to give Barbara Gordon a proper introduction into Warner Bros.’ burgeoning cinematic universe.
